From July 26 to August 11, 2024, the Olympic Games will take place in Paris: 19 days of competition, 32 different sports, 10,500 athletes and 329 events will be contested! A historic moment for France, which has never hosted an event of such scale in the past. This year, Paris will be at the heart of the sports media, offering a unique athletic experience, but that's not all! The Olympics is a multicultural festival of cultural gatherings, artistic performances and a way to meet up around various passions. Join the Alliance Francaise, which is closely following these performances and offering you events in the theme of the Paris Olympic Games!
For the end of July, we have 2 Summer Camps for kids and teens on the theme of Olympic Games! As athletes proudly qualified for the AFV Olympics, children will start by creating their teams and choosing the nation they represent. After an opening ceremony, they will participate in creative art, construction, and other outdoor fun activities to win this great and beautiful competition between teammates! As the human body is the athlete's tool, they will also learn more about their own bodies. To finish the week, a closing ceremony and distribution of medals will bring this crazy competition to an end. Because our main goal is to help you in your learning journey, here's a small selection of French expressions connected to sport to impress your friends!
1. Mettre les bouchées doubles
Used to designate someone who puts in extra effort to achieve a goal, its English equivalent is "to go the extra mile".
Example: "Pour le tournoi de tennis, Marie met les bouchées doubles à l'entraînement cette semaine."
2. Donner le meilleur de soi-même
"Donner le meilleur de soi-même" means giving everything you've got and doing your best to win. In English, we say "to
give it one's all".
Exemple: "Le joueur a perdu, mais il a donné le meilleur de lui-même du début à la fin."
3. Être sur le banc de touche
When an athlete doesn't take part in a match, we say that they are "sur le banc de touche". This translates into "to
be on the sidelines".
Exemple: "Elle était sur le banc de touche parce qu'elle récupérait d'une blessure à la cheville."
