On January 13, 2018, an alert was issued to every citizen of Hawaii:
"BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL."
Hawaiians were suddenly faced with a real and urgent nuclear threat - one that we all currently face, but rarely recognize. As Kauai resident Cynthia Lazaroff would later say, "The alert was false, but the nuclear threat is real... [this] is not a script, not a video game...we experienced it personally, we felt the terror." Although nothing happened that day, everything changed.
On the Morning You Wake (to the End of the World) is a virtual reality documentary that immerses the audience in the direct experience of Hawaii citizens to convey the fundamental injustice of a world where nuclear weapons exist.

Dr.
Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio is a Kanaka Maoli wahine artist / activist / scholar / storyteller born and raised in Pālolo Valley to
parents Jonathan and Mary Osorio. Heoli earned her PhD in English (Hawaiian literature) in 2018 from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
Currently, Heoli is an Assistant Professor of Indigenous and Native Hawaiian Politics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Heoli is a
three-time national poetry champion, poetry mentor and a published author.
