The Event 

[EN] Organized by the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver, the next EU BOOK CLUB will focus on the classic "A Woman" ("Una donna") by early feminist author Sibilla Aleramo on Saturday, June 15th.

The Book

[EN] Aleramo’s 1906 "Una Donna"  fills the void that Virginia Woolf’s  A Room of One’s Own" occupies for the Anglo-American tradition. Aleramo’s autobiographical protagonist commits ‘the cultural crime’ of leaving her child in pursuit of her own life, thereby breaking the ‘monstrous chain’ that binds mothers to daughters in a continuum of maternal sacrifice. Complex and controversial seems to be the reading of motherhood in "Una Donna"; as evidently as she, on the one hand, abandons her child, frustrating him and endangering the process during the formation of his personality, on the other hand, through this very same gesture, she manages to break the entrapping social chain and to pave, for herself and her son, the road to liberty by freeing them both from the social and psychological pressure of patriarchy."Una Donna" was composed between 1901 and 1904 and published in 1906 after being rejected by some prominent editors. In 1906, it suddenly became a great success. The first translation –into Spanish (Una Mujer, 1907) – was followed, as early as 1908, by a Swedish translation, a German translation, an English translation by Maria Hornor Lansdale (initially the title was A Woman at Bay, then simply A Woman) and a French translation.

[FR] "Una Donna" d'Aleramo (1906) comble le vide qu'occupe "Une chambre à soi" de Virginia Woolf dans la tradition anglo-américaine. La protagoniste autobiographique d'Aleramo commet le "crime culturel" de quitter son enfant pour poursuivre sa propre vie, brisant ainsi la "chaîne monstrueuse" qui lie les mères à leurs filles dans un continuum de sacrifice maternel. La lecture de la maternité dans "Una Donna" semble être complexe et controversée; alors que, d'une part, elle abandonne son enfant, le frustrant et mettant en danger le processus de formation de sa personnalité, d'autre part, par ce même geste, elle parvient à briser la chaîne sociale qui l'emprisonne et à ouvrir, pour elle-même et pour son fils, la voie de la liberté en les libérant tous deux de la pression sociale et psychologique du patriarcat. "Una Donna" a été composé entre 1901 et 1904 et publié en 1906 après avoir été refusé par certains éditeurs importants. En 1906, elle connaît soudain un grand succès. La première traduction - en espagnol (Una Mujer, 1907) - a été suivie, dès 1908, d'une traduction suédoise, d'une traduction allemande, d'une traduction anglaise par Maria Hornor Lansdale (initialement le titre était "A Woman at Bay", puis simplement "A Woman") et d'une traduction française.

The Author

[EN] Sibilla Aleramo (1876-1960) was an Italian writer and poet best known for her autobiographical depictions of life as a woman in late 19th-century Italy. In 1925, she supported the Manifesto of the Anti-Fascist intellectuals. Aleramo died in Rome at the age of 83.
